The Details

  • A Montessori classroom is specially designed for children to explore materials independently or in small groups within the context of a larger community. The idea of being part of a social community of learners strengthens interpersonal skills in both academic and social development. Children playing and working in this type of environment learn to respect each other’s individual decisions and physical space, while also learning to work together. This instills in the young child a sense of community, rather than competition.

With the support of a trained Montessori teacher, children are guided through the curriculum in a way that best suits each child’s individual learning style.

  • The Highland Pre-School program is designed to help foster the growth of the whole child— physically, socially, emotionally, cognitively and creatively. The program includes dramatic play, music, movement, games, craft activities, art and stories, as well as field trips and other special activities.

Our goal is to provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere with varied creative play materials, and a program that will help your child develop a curiosity for the world around him/her and a love for learning!

  • At Highland Pre-School we like to maintain a child/teacher ratio which is lower than required by the Maine Licensing Rules set forth by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). While DHHS Licensing requires a 10:1 ratio, we strive to maintain an 8 or 9:1 ratio. Only teachers in the classroom are included in the count to determine these ratios. Parents and volunteers will at no time be included in the child/teacher ratio. Child/teacher ratios will be maintained during all hours of operation.
